Cytogenetics Training for URB and BSMMU Researchers

From 4 – 8 August 2019, Dr. Ashok K. Giri, Ph.D., from the CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, in Kolkata, India conducted a hands-on training - “Human Lymphocyte Culture for Chromosomal Aberrations Assay and Micronucleus Assays in Human Lymphocyte Culture and also from Buccal Mucosa Cells and Human Urothelial Cells.” The primarily lab-based training was held at the Pathology Department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).

Over the past few years UChicago Research Bangladesh (URB), icddrb, and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) have been jointly implementing a project on air pollution and health impacts in their study sites. This project explores indoor air pollution and health impacts among children, women and household members. As a part of the project, the team is providing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for clean cook stoves to the local community for the next two years. These cook stoves are used for daily cooking and can have a major impact on health and save time for families.

On 18 July 2018, Professor Syed Modasser Ali, Chairman of Bangladesh Medical Research Council (BMRC), visited UChicago Research Bangladesh’s (URB’s) field office (Araihazar Upazila of Narayanganj District) to tour its laboratory and clinic facilities and to learn more about its field research activities.

On 6 June 2018, Mr. Nazrul Islam (Babu), Member of the Parliament (Narayanganj-2), visited URB’s field office at Araihazar and distributed LPG to the research participants as part of the Bangladesh GEOHealth project in collaboration with ICDDR,B.

New NIH Award

Bangladesh Center for Research Excellence in Non-Communicable Disease (NIH Grant # P20CA210305): This new award will support planning activities for establishing a Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) center in Bangladesh in partnership with Bangabandu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, and several other institutions in Bangladesh. The Indian Institute of Chemical Biology will be a cooperating partner in this initiative.
